Botox: Less-Known Aspects of This Popular Treatment
18th December 2024By Dr Bela, Dermatologist at Dr Bela Clinic, West London
At the Dr Bela Clinic in Chiswick, I always strive to bring you the latest insights from dermatological research to help you achieve healthier, more youthful-looking skin. These updates aren’t about vanity—they’re about enhancing your health and longevity. How your skin looks often reflects your overall health. If you see a younger version of yourself in the mirror, you’re more likely to adopt habits that support a longer, healthier life.
Here are five key scientific updates on skin ageing and how I’ve incorporated them into my skincare routine.
-
The Role of Exercise in Skin Aging
A fascinating study from June 2024 compared the effects of aerobic and resistance training on skin ageing. Conducted over 16 weeks with 61 middle-aged Japanese women, the research showed that while both exercise types improved skin elasticity, only resistance training increased dermal thickness.
This means resistance training doesn’t just build muscle—it also strengthens your skin. Both aerobic and resistance exercises are crucial for healthy skin, so make them part of your routine.
-
The Power of the Mediterranean Diet
An 18-month clinical trial in Israel and the US found that the Mediterranean diet, rich in polyphenols from fruits and vegetables, slows biological ageing. It also improves skin firmness, elasticity, pigmentation, and reduces wrinkles.
To optimise your skin health, focus on:
- High lean protein intake
- Fibre from fruits and vegetables (if tolerated)
- Unsaturated fats like olive oil, nuts, and avocados
Diet plays a vital role in skin health, and what you eat shines through on the outside.
-
Collagen Supplements
Collagen peptide supplements have been proven in multiple studies to improve skin hydration, elasticity, and reduce wrinkles. Despite some controversy online, the evidence from randomised controlled trials supports their effectiveness.
I personally take 10–15 grams of collagen peptides daily.

Key Ingredients in Skincare Products
- Sunscreen: Daily sunscreen use not only prevents skin ageing but can even reverse some ageing signs. Both mineral and chemical sunscreens are effective, but mineral sunscreens may be better for those concerned about absorption.
My recommendation: ZO Sunscreen and Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30
- Retinols: These are a must-have for fighting skin ageing. They stimulate collagen production, improve blood flow, and can reverse age-related skin changes. Start slowly, as retinols can initially irritate the skin.
My recommendation: RETINOL SKIN BRIGHTENER 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%
- Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids (AHAs and BHAs): Ingredients like lactic acid, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid work on the deeper layers of the skin to reduce wrinkles and stimulate collagen regeneration.
My recommendation:
ZO Skin Health Exfoliating Cleanser
ZO Complexion Renewal Pads and Oil Control Pads
-
Moisturisers with Ceramides and Vitamin B3
Ceramides strengthen the skin barrier and prevent dryness, while vitamin B3 (nicotinamide) improves pigmentation, blotchiness, and redness. These ingredients are essential for maintaining healthy, hydrated, and youthful skin.
My recommendation: ZO Daily Power Defense contains Ceramides while ZO Brightalive® contains vitamin B3 (nicotinamide).
Looking Ahead
In addition to these strategies, there are more advanced treatments available, including Botox, Dermal Fillers or Polynucleotides. Combining a science-backed skincare routine, a healthy lifestyle, and these medical treatments allows us to stop and even reverse the signs of skin ageing.
At Dr Bela Clinic, my mission is to help you look and feel your best while maintaining your health for years to come. If you’d like to explore how these updates could work for your skin, book a consultation at the clinic.
